Global Insurance: Rising to the Challenge

Panelists include

  • Gavin Davis, Director of Research, Inside P&C (Moderator)
  • Kieran Dempsey, Executive Vice President, Chief Underwriting Officer, Ryan Specialty Group
  • David Flandro, Managing Director, Analytics, Hyperion X
  • Paul Horgan, Head of U.S. Commercial Insurance, Zurich North America
  • Bryan Schofield, Senior Vice President, Commercial Lines, Orchid Insurance
  • Tim Zawacki, Senior Research Analyst, S&P Global Market Intelligence

Up for discussion:

  • Pricing and the underwriting cycle: we entered 2020 with clear dynamics in place. A need for pricing and reserve pressures had been well communicated to clients and intermediaries had largely accepted a need for gradual price improvement. The key was expected to be whether pricing would stick past Q1 when the market lapped rate on rate. How much has that playbook been thrown out of the window? What has changed, and what has stayed the same?
  • Coronavirus: what are companies expecting in terms of spill over claims in BI, impact on defence costs, other sources of losses? Is a mid-sized cat a reasonable estimate? Where will the losses fall / not fall? How does the market respond and help solve client needs around risk transfer going forward?
  • Broker consolidation and M&A: how does it change the market, and how do insurance companies respond?
  • Corporate governance: a hot topic over the last 12 months. Do our corporate governance standards meet the maturity of the industry and our stage in the life cycle? Do boards across the industry have enough diversity in thinking to hold management to account for company cultures?
14:15 - 14:55

Panel discussion

Reinsurance: Navigating a Fragmented Market

  • James Thaler, Senior Analyst, Insurance Insider (Moderator)
  • Jason Busti, President, North America, AXIS Re
  • Lara Mowery, Managing Director, Head of Global Property Specialty, Guy Carpenter
  • Keith Wolfe, President, US P&C, Swiss Re
  • Greg Wolyniec, President & CEO Ascot U.S.

Up for discussion:

The P&C reinsurance market turned in 2019, with momentum building and pricing resurgent in response to record catastrophe losses in the prior two years.

However, a brewing casualty reserving crisis in the US must not be ignored and how reinsurers respond will be pivotal to sector dynamics. Dissent remains as to where rate rises sit relative to loss-cost inflation in highly stressed areas like general liability, commercial auto, D&O and med-mal, prompting divergent underwriting strategies from reinsurers that are likely to continue throughout 2020.

Moreover, the advent of coronavirus has thrown the (re)insurance industry headfirst into a maelstrom of operational challenges, potentially significant losses and reputational risk. (Re)insurers find themselves torn between playing their societal role and safeguarding their own financial stability.

  • What is the current state of play in the reinsurance market?
  • Coronavirus: what is the impact for the P&C universe from the on-going fallout? How should the reinsurance industry respond? How have previous loss events and Covid-19 changed the dynamic between cedants and reinsurers?
  • Are warnings from primary and reinsurance carriers on inadequate pricing and deteriorating prior-year losses only a sign of things to come?
